Phabo is ready to peel back the layers of his woman’s garments on his new song “Underneath.”
On the velvety track, co-produced by EJ Croft, Twelve40, and Tay Da Prince, Phabo croons: “Under your clothes, you wanna show me / Instructions on where I should go / It’s in your control, you gotta hold onto me,” he sings in the chorus.
Speaking on his new track, Phabo exclusively tells Rated R&B, “‘Underneath’ serves as a grand reveal that calls back to both ‘Fur Coat’ and ‘5000 Degrees.’ It’s a tomboy appreciation record that speaks to the pretty women worldwide who wear baggier, less form-fitting clothes, much like Aaliyah and TLC used to do. And although this stylistic choice can leave a lot to the imagination, it adds a heightened element of surprise once those baggy clothes have come off.”
As Phabo indicated above, “Underneath” is the follow-up to “Fur Coat” and “5000 Degrees.” Regarding the latter track, he told Rated R&B, “‘5000 degrees’ paints a picture of both angst and anticipation while out partying with your love interest. No matter where you are in the hemisphere, things have the propensity to get hot and heavy when your muse is setting the tone.”
“Underneath” is Phabo’s fourth single of 2024. He launched everything with the Trey Lander and Markus Randle-produced “Kissing In Da Club” in August.
“‘Kissing In Da Club’ is the overall embodiment of returning back home after a long tour. As a touring artist, more often than not, the act of reconnecting with your loved one can be so important during that time,” Phabo told Rated R&B.
He added, “It has the propensity to supersede the need for privacy. A crowded space can easily become grounds for PDA, or a dark club corner may grant you a brief moment of intimacy. I just wanted to create a record that resonates with that angst and those connections.”
In 2023, the Los Angeles-based singer released his sophomore album, Don’t Get Too Cozy. The project included features from Ambré, Arin Ray, Shae Universe, and Kalan.FrFr.
Phabo’s music aside, the talented artist co-wrote “Chapel” on Kehlani‘s Grammy-nominated album, Crash. The project is up for Best Progressive R&B Album at the 2025 Grammy Awards. He also contributed background vocals to Khalid‘s single “Please Don’t Fall In Love With Me,” which appears on his third album, Sincere.
