Mitch & Millie return with their new single, ‘Little Town’, a deeply intimate story, reflecting on Millie’s past, shadowed by tragedy.
Inspired by the likes of Jelly Roll, and Lainey Wilson, Mitch & Millie use their music as a tool for growth, their sound distinct and compelling, while being quite personal. Shifting gears from their incredible covers to now releasing their own music, Mitch & Millie’s first original single is deeply intimate, and bravely tackles deep trauma.
‘Little Town’ takes us to Millie’s past, where she grew up in a small town, in Ontario, Canada. The song, produced by Will Baker and three-time Grammy winner Earl Cohen, whose extensive collaborations include artists such as Lady Gaga, Whitney Houston, and Pink, the song fell together effortlessly, “like it wrote itself.” With Mitch crafting the melody and bassline, entirely on guitar, Millie was therefore provided with the perfect foundation to speak from the heart with her lyrics. Addressing dark themes of drug abuse, self-harm, and sexual assault, ‘Little Town’ goes beyond powerful, and should rather be described as compelling, perhaps even forceful. Millie’s vocals are dramatic and haunting as she speaks her truth and confronts her abuser, standing proud as someone who has now “made it out.” ‘Little Town’ is empowering, as Millie reassures listeners that healing is possible, no matter what trauma has been experienced.
The music video for ‘Little Town’ is as powerful and evocative as the song itself. Shot in Roanoke, Virginia, the clip opens with a young girl, safe in her bed, before transforming into Millie as an adult. We get a snapshot of Millie’s life, as it’s been altered by sexual abuse, as she struggles with drug use, and self-harm. Despite it all, Millie refuses to give up, and with Mitch standing behind her – both literally and figuratively – he is clearly a great support.
The scene shifts from dark to light, and we see train tracks, signifying her path to escape, where she can start the next chapter of her life’s journey. Dressed in matching nightgowns, Millie’s younger self tightly clasps a teddy bear in one hand, while holding firmly the hand of grown-up Millie in the other. They walk away, and never look back, an anthem of resilience, dedicated to Millie’s younger sister, Brittany, who lost her life to suicide, in 2022.
