MJ Lenderman, a 25 year old indie rock songwriter also known for his guitar playing in the Asheville, North Carolina based band Wednesday, has been seeing success recently with his solo career. In September he dropped his latest full length album, Manning Fireworks. He’s been on tour for about a month with opener Ryan Davis & The Roadhouse band, who delivered a fiery country-tinged set before Lenderman took the stage. Davis was playing songs from their 2023 record ‘Dancing on The Edge’. Davis played with two drummers which was surprising and added an element of balance to their rollicking set. His live band also included two members of Styrofoam Winos, a country indie rock band from Nashville.
After Davis finished up, MJ was on. He opened up the set with hit ‘Wristwatch’, which he recently played with his band on TV on Jimmy Fallon. He started to play ‘Joker Lips’ and there was a brief medical emergency in the crowd, so he stopped the set. The person was okay, it was resolved and he continued with the set. Lenderman has a killer live band (named The Wind) including Philly’s own Jon Samuels on lead guitar. The set was a mix of songs from Manning Fireworks and 2022’s Boat Songs with a few others sprinkled in. Normally if an artist played for over an hour and a half (2 hours total), the audience might be tired of them or bored but not the case with MJ, he and his live band were very entertaining and held the audience’s interest, people were singing along the whole night. They finished up the set during the encore with a Warren Zevon cover ‘Werewolves of London’, inviting the Ryan Davis band back onto the stage along with special guest Dan Wriggins (of Philly band Friendship).
