After making a splash at Cannes, the trans cartel musical Emilia Perez has received its first trailer. Watch it below.
The Spanish-language comedy stars Zoe Saldaña as Rita, a lawyer recruited by the notorious cartel leader Manitas (Karla Sofía Gascón) to arrange a gender affirmation surgery. Four years later, Manitas — now named Emilia Perez — tasks Rita with moving her wife, Jessi (Selena Gomez), and children from a safe house in Switzerland to Mexico City, where Emilia poses as their aunt.
In other words, it’s kind of a modern-day take on Mrs. Doubtfire, but with an actual trans actress and musical numbers. Currently, the trailer is only available with French subtitles.
Emilia Perez was written and directed by Jacques Audiard, with original songs by French singer Camille. The cast is filled out by Édgar Ramírez, Adriana Paz, and Mark Ivanir. The film won the Jury Prize and Best Actress award for its female ensemble at Cannes last month.
Last month, it was reported Emilia Perez was nearing a deal with Netflix for US and UK rights. For now, it will premiere in French theaters on August 21st.
