Miguel’s 2011 single “Sure Thing” is gaining new momentum.
The Happy Perez-produced track re-enters the Billboard Hot 100 chart this week at No. 49. (It also moves to No. 12 on Billboard’s Hot R&B Songs chart this week.)
To celebrate his latest chart achievement, Miguel shared a video on Instagram where he performed an acoustic rendition of “Sure Thing.”
“YOU GUYS GOT ME CHARTING BEFORE I GET THIS NEW ONE OFF ! APPRECIATE ALL THE LOVE FOR SURE THING,” Miguel wrote in the caption, which also seemingly hints at new music on the way.
The song’s return to the Hot 100 comes after going viral on TikTok, with users creating different videos featuring the track’s official audio. Its popularity on TikTok doesn’t stop there.
At the time of publication, “Sure Thing” is No. 14 on Apple Music’s Top 100: Global chart, which features “the most-played songs around the world.”
On Spotify, Miguel’s self-penned tune is No. 25 on the streaming service’s Weekly Top Songs Global chart. It also has exceeded 600 million streams.
“Sure Thing” first appeared on the Hot 100 chart on March 26, 2011, and peaked at No. 36 on June 4, 2011. Before that, in May 2011, it reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.
According to Billboard, “Sure Thing” last appeared on the Hot 100 in August 2011.
The heartwarming tune is lifted from Miguel’s debut album, All I Want Is You, which dropped in November 2010 via Jive Records.
The platinum-selling album also included the Hot 100-charting singles “All I Want Is You” featuring J. Cole (No. 58 peak) and “Quickie” (No. 62 peak).
Miguel has released three studio albums since All I Want Is You, including Kaleidoscope Dream (2012), Wildheart (2015) and War & Leisure (2015).
In 2021, he released his EP Art Dealer Chic 4, the fourth installment of his Art Dealer Chic series that initially launched in 2012. The project included the lead single “Funeral,” produced by Deion Gill of Ghoss and Alekaei Savchenko.
“Art Dealer Chic is the mindset to invest our beliefs in thoughts and emotions that add the most value in our lives,” Miguel explained. “The same way an art dealer would dictate the value of a particular work, we dictate and curate what thoughts and emotions are worth our time and energy.”
Circling back to “Sure Thing,” in a 2011 interview with BET, Miguel revealed that the song was almost given to Usher. “[‘Sure Thing’] made it to the ears of Mark Pitts over at ByStorm/Jive and at the time he was trying to finish Usher’s project, which was the Here I Stand album. He wanted to use the song for Usher’s project,” said Miguel.
Instead of passing the song over to Usher, Pitts ended up signing Miguel to ByStorm Entertainment/Jive Records.
“I guess he sat with it for a few days, for about a week or so, and he fell in love with the voice and wanted to meet the writer. He flew me out and we vibed,” Miguel told BET. “I went back home and a week later I flew back out and met all the A&Rs and the president of Jive at the time…and they wouldn’t let me leave until I signed.”
