Brooklyn’s Diver Through calls on the very best of the 1980s and 1990s for the rhythm of their new single, ‘To Death’. We’re reminded of the persistent drumbeat of The Cure, and the overall sonic style of The Gin Blossoms. But while it’s got a retro flavour, it’s very much a contemporary song, with the potential to be a new classic.
‘To Death’, from Diver Through’s upcoming second album, ‘All Nighter’, set for release next month (how is it possible September is mere weeks away??), for all my comparisons to bands of the 80s and 90s, really has a timeless quality, and sits quite well alongside the output of their contemporaries, such as Lumineers, or Kodaline. Produced by Alex Dezen, the new album will be out on Subluna Records, and if ‘To Death’ is anything to go by, it is one that I’m going to really enjoy. It’s catchy, it’s slick, it’s just downright fabulous.
Diver Through is the brainchild of veteran songwriter, Michael Baynes, and it comes from a line in a poem written by one of his friends. The first release under that name was the EP, ‘Scattered Days’. This was followed by album number 1, ‘The Way We Were’, released in 2020. While Diver Through is Baynes’ baby, and he performs both vocals and guitars, he’s also accompanied by Mike Rellah on bass, and Ken Nasta behind the drums.
