The 2022 BET Awards were held live from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, California, on Sunday night. Hosted by actress Taraji P. Henson, the star-studded ceremony featured performances from Lizzo, Muni Long, Chlöe, Givēon and more.
Jazmine Sullivan took home the first award of the night, Best Female R&B/Pop Artist. The Grammy-winning singer/songwriter used her acceptance speech to urge men to support women, especially in light of the Supreme Court’s reversal of Roe v. Wade.
“I do this for the women — for my sisters, especially. It’s a hard time right now for us and I want to speak directly to the men,” said Sullivan.
“We need y’all. We need y’all to stand up, stand up for us, stand up with us. If you’ve ever benefited from a woman making one of the toughest decisions of her life, which is terminating a pregnancy, you need to be standing with us. This is not just a woman’s issue. This is everybody’s issue, and we need your support more than ever.”
